History of Mt. Everest

Great Trigonometric Survey

It was in 1808 when the British did the “Great Trigonometric Survey” in India. This survey is to find the tallest peak in the world. They had a hard time in India because of their large equipment. They started at the southern regions of India and they slowly went north. Later on, they arrived at the foot of the Himalayan Mountains in 1830. Nepal was not very hospitable with them because they know the political background of the British people and they have some ideas of what the British may do to them.

Kanchenjunga

The British then surveyed the Himalayan Mountains in another track just parallel to the Nepal entrance. They had a hard time in those areas but they were still able to survey some parts of the Himalayan mountains. Andrew Waugh, the surveyor general in India had some record of the Sawajpore region back in 1847. at that time it was the Kanchenjunga that was considered as the highest peak. This was due to curiosity. They saw that there was a bigger mountain at the back of the kanchenjunga. Waugh sent James Nicolson to survey that area. He went a long distance just to reach the foot of that mountain which was behind the Kanchenjunga.

Nicolson

James Nicolson went to panta so that he can determine the height oft the mountain. He had a hard time measuring the mountain because the light was on his way. The light was not on the formula of the equation, making it more difficult fot him to compute the real height of the mountain. His rough computation was around 9,200 meters. This is around 30,000 feet. Unfortunately he was hit by malaria and have to be sent back to base. Michael Hennessy, one of Waugh’s assistant already computed the other mountain using the height of Kanchenjunga.

Mt. Everest

It was a mathematician from India named Radhanth Sijdar with a Bengal Surveyor who determined and recognized Mt. Everest as the tallest peak in the world back in 1852. This was recognized at the Survey headquarters situated at Dehradun. The computations was checked and double checked many times just to make sure. This prolonged the official announcement that Mt. Everest is the tallest peak in the world. Waugh and his assistants used the information gathered by Nicolson during 1854. There where a lot of factors that affected the computations of Nicolson such as barometric pressure, temperature, and light interaction. However, later on, Waugh reached a conclusion and he sent a letter to another assistant in Kolkata declaring his observations. The observations was that the peak behind Kanchenjunga was taller that Kanchenjunga. This means the mountain behind it, which was Mt. Everest, is the tallest peak in the world.
